H. David Schuringa, B.A., M.A.R., M.Div., Th.M., Ph.D., earned his doctorate in Homiletiek and Praktische Theologie under Prof. Dr. Klaas Runia at the Theologische Universiteit Kampen. His dissertation is a comprehensive study entitled, Hearing the Word in a Visual Age: A Practical Theological Consideration of Preaching within the Contemporary Urge to Visualization.
Post-Graduate work in Europe included advanced studies under Prof. Dr. C. Trimp at the Gereformeerde Theologische Universiteit and conferences with Prof. Dr. W. H. Velema at the Theologische Universiteit Apeldoorn.
Prior to Kampen, he studied at Trinity Christian College, Calvin College, The Institute for Christian Studies in Toronto, Westminster Theological Seminary, The University of Pennsylvania and at Calvin Theological Seminary, where he wrote his master's thesis entitled, The Preaching of the Word as a Means of Grace: The Views of Herman Hoeksema and R. B. Kuiper, under Prof. Dr. C. G. Kromminga and in consultation with Prof. H. C. Hoeksema at the Protestant Reformed Seminary.
Raised in the Calvinist business world, Dr. Schuringa taught and led for many years at Westminster Seminary California (Founding Faculty Member) and Crossroad Bible Institute. He served as an adjunct professor at The International Theological Seminary, Chong Shin University, Calvin Seminary and Kuyper College. In addition, he guest lectured at The Sarospatic Reformed Theological University in Hungary and pastored the local church in West Michigan and Southern California.
Before serving as a Research Director at NSMC, he worked for the nonprofit, Michigan Campaign for Justice, and subsequently for several years as a (Founding) Commissioner appointee of Governor Rick Snyder to improve and reform public defense efforts for the poor in the criminal justice system. In Washington D.C., he has presented on Capitol Hill before bipartisan congressional and senate briefings, as well as before the Michigan Supreme Court.
NSMC is a supple research platform and think tank for the wetenschappelijke functioneren binnen het spanningsveld tussen theologische theorie-vorming and praxis-handelingen [the transaction analysis of the relationship between theological theory-formation and humanitarian activation], particularly for the empowerment of the under-privileged of society.
Mary and David Schuringa lead a contemplative life beside the quiet waters of Minkler Lake in West Michigan. They gratefully enjoy their four married children with 14 living grandchildren.
Though for the last two decades encumbered with debilitating physical infirmities, as a practical theologian Dr. Schuringa also never escapes the burden to discover with God's people, in the diligent study of God's Word, how to live more faithfully in God's world.
It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle
than for a man rich in knowledge to enter the Kingdom of Heaven
- Abraham Kuyper
